In my humble opinion, you can never spend enough time in Scotland. There's something simply magical about the place.
We've had the good fortune to spend several months in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeenshire. Our three weeks in Northeast Scotland were filled with standing stones, beaches, and castles. We happened upon Highland Games and experienced an extraordinary sheepdog demonstration at a little sheep farm.
I'd already been a big fan of Yvette Webster, also known as the Wayfaring Kiwi, for quite a while. Yvette is a writer, photographer, award-winning journalist, Scotland travel advisor, and all around amazing person. During our time in Aberdeenshire, she posted that she too was exploring the area with her husband Craig and their new baby. So I invited her and her family to join us for the sheepdog demonstration. It was a sunny yet chilly day, and I wore my sweater and jacket. Yvette and Craig showed up in shorts and tees, which tells you a bit about the weather in Scotland!
Yvette was on my Author Dream Team for Sirene MediaWorks from Day 1. To my great joy, she was intrigued by the idea for Edinburgh at Dawn from our Cities at Dawn guidebook series.
Over the past few months, Yvette has been exploring this magnificent city in the wee, small hours of the morning. Edinburgh's beauty and magic are magnified at dawn, and Yvette is capturing it all in her vivid stories and gorgeous photos. I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at some photos from Yvette's dawn excursions.
Almost impassible during the day, the Royal Mile is yours to explore at 6am. Even Yvette noticed details there that she'd never seen before. The views from Calton Hill are even more breathtaking when you can sit and meditate as the light washes over the city and the Firth of Forth. If you're lucky, you'll run into an actual milkman on Cockburn Street delivering bottles to the restaurants and cafés for the day. And every morning's adventure in the book ends with a delicious breakfast, from a warm cinnamon bun to a hearty stack of pancakes with eggs and sausages!
Edinburgh at Dawn will be available in the spring, and it's going to be a very special book about a very special way to explore this ancient city.
